Frequently asked questions

What sewing machine and serger do you use?

My sewing machine is a Heavy Duty Singer. My serger is a Brother 1034D.

What camera do you use?

I have a Nikon D3300 DSLR camera. I’m an amateur photographer and I mostly take photos in Auto mode. 🙂

I do hope to learn to use all the features someday and get better pictures. It’s on my to-do list.

Do you edit your photos?

Yes. I use Gimp, a free and open-source graphics editor, and I love it.

Can I use a photo from your blog on my website?

You may use only one photo as a reference, as long as you credit www.icansewthis.com and link back to the original post.

Please, do not remove the watermark and don’t copy my tutorials in full and post them on your website.

Photos of children on this blog cannot be used without permission.

When did you start sewing, and how did you learn?

I started sewing when I was about 27, right after my second child was born.

I stumbled upon some amazing sewing tutorials on the internet and I really wanted to be able to make those pretty things myself.

The first items I sewed were simple skirts, baby bibs, and blankets.

It was hard in the beginning, a lot of trial and error, considering I didn’t know anybody around me who owned a sewing machine – no friends and no relatives interested in sewing.

I learned a lot from YouTube, sewing blogs, books, and magazines.

What’s the story behind “I can sew this”?

I am completely self-taught and I am a completely ordinary person. This is the core message of this blog – if I can sew this, you can too!

What do you like least about sewing?

Ironing the fabric. I know there are lots of people who enjoy this activity, but for me, it’s a chore. I think I’d rather unpick seams than use the iron.

What does your sewing room look like?

My sewing room is a tiny 80 square feet office.

Just imagine one big Ikea shelving unit crammed full of fabrics, two sewing machines, one serger, two laptops and two desks (I share the home office with my husband), iron and ironing board, two mannequin torsos and lots of sewing supplies. And, occasionally, a cat sitting on my desk while I work.
